Previously, we posted about the bookstore auctioning off teenagers…
I went to the auction on Saturday to pick up a couple helpers, and was prepared to put up a fight, having practiced aggressive bidding tactics I could fall back on if necessary. But, it turns out the bidding war was reduced to a faint skirmish and even that was settled amicably between the opposing parties. There were just two bidders: Redwood Coast Land Conservancy wanted a team for maintenance on the bluff trail in downtown Gualala, and I was after a couple kids to help at home.

Since the one strapping lad around whom I had planned my work day showed up ON CRUTCHES! I relented and went over to the enemy. Coasting Home donated $300 to RCLC, which they combined with their limit of $200, and they got the full compliment of students for the trail work. Happily, the weather was great, and the kids learned a lot about weeds, natural plants, persistence, and fund raising!
All together, I believe the graduating 8th graders of Horicon Elementary garnered over $1100 from additional bids and donations which resulted from this event. Perhaps best of all, I have the comforting promise of endless hours of service from that gimpy guy as soon as his knee surgery has healed!

Saturday May 10th is the annual Architectural Tour which showcases a broad variety of unique northcoast homes. It’s a self-guided tour, so you get the tickets and map, then just cruise around at your own pace. See only a few, or see ‘em all!
Check the link here http://www.simsc.org/tour.htm for details on the day’s events, and how to get tickets. But you’ve got to plan ahead and get your tickets SOON! The sponsors say there are only a limited number available on the day of the Tour.
If you will be booking a house for the weekend, we can pre-purchase your tickets and included them in your arrival packet to save you the trouble.
And of course, Sunday the 11th is Mother’s Day. We’re teaming up with Trink’s to offer a $5 gift certificate toward their sumptuous Sunday breakfast. Come on up and treat Mom!

I use one of those dry-erase planning calendars in my office. The kind where you have to fill in each month with its dates, and then keep it updated.
Today it was time to fill in May and June. As I was erasing March and April, I had flashes of association with some of the dates I saw disappearing under my cloth. I remembered an event or an appointment…or something I need to follow up on!
Oh my! how the days are just wiped away. Two months. GONE, just like that. Three or four months ago, March and April were still in front of us, with all the promise of spring, and holidays and plenty of time to do things before they arrived. Now it’s May and June already!
The Redwood coast is an amazing place, but even here, time flies. If you can make a break in your own busy calendar, we’d love to have you join us here for some of those brief moments. Browse our vacation homes link and sometime soon maybe we’ll be helping you with a reservation! Don’t put it off.

One of our favorite shops here in town is the Four-Eyed Frog bookstore located in Cypress Village. Brothers Joel and Jeremy Crockett (from a famous singing family, btw!) have a remarkable place for browsing, discussing, meeting friends, and buying great books and other literanalia (I may have made that last word up…). One of the best things about Four-Eyed Frog is the steady stream of interesting events held at the store or sponsored by them. I encourage a peek at their site for the latest–see our links on the sidebar. But here’s a tease:
WIN A PAIR OF TEENAGERS!
Horicon School is auctioning off six 8th-grade students
You help the six Horicon students who are graduating into high school. And they help you! All six will be auctioned in pairs of two to the highest bidders. The winners get two students for 3 hours of hard work. The students get a meaningful graduation and a 2-day trip to Asilomar on the Monterey Peninsula.

As the whales near the end of their northward procession, we are met with springtimey winds. The best part about the breezes is they keep any hint of fog out on the horizon where we like it. On the way home yesterday evening I had a great view of a melon-ball sun blazing all neon as it glowed good bye, then I noticed a grey fox trotting comfortably across the highway right in front of me. He crossed at an intersection, so as he continued west, I decided to turn in and see if I could spy out his route. Busy peering into the underbrush below the cypresses, I almost ran into a young doe who was beginning her evening meal on the far end of the hedgerow. The fox was lost to the dusk and I decided to leave the doe and her party to their meal. The sun was taken by the fog bank before it could make a final touchdown, so no green flash this time. These secret times make life in Gualala so precious!
